Cagney and Lacey aired on CBS from October 1982 through May 1988 and included 125 episodes over 7 seasons. Four made-for-television movies based on the series aired between 1994 and 1996.

The series starred Sharon Gless as NYPD Detective Chris Cagney and Tyne Daly as her partner, Detective Mary Beth Lacey.

The pilot for the series, which aired in 1981, starred Loretta Swit as Chris Cagney. Meg Foster initially played the role of Chris Cagney for the first 6 episodes of the series before it was assumed by Sharon Gless. The DVD released for Season One begins with the second season of the series (omitting the pilot and episodes starring Meg Foster).
